Detoxing from Copper Toxicity
You can get what is called a hair mineral analysis done that looks at the mineral levels (including copper) in your body. I got mine done by nutritionist Susan Cachay and Dr. Wilson, and it showed that the copper levels in my body were far too high, while my iron levels were way too low. Basically a hair mineral analysis looks at all the minerals your body is depositing into your hair over time, which gives you some idea what minerals are being deposited into your tissues. It's pretty interesting and can help you keep track of your progress while detoxing. :)
Here are some tips (based on my experience) that might help you detoxify your body from copper toxicity.
- Most importantly, get your IUD taken out. Do not take any other forms of contraceptive such as the birth control pill or the NuvaRing.
- Drink only spring or distilled water: I would recommend sticking with distilled water for the first month or so. Drink LOTS of water. Do not drink any tap water.
- Don't drink any alcohol, do any drugs or take any medication (including Advil or Tylenol).
- Eat lots of light meals spread out throughout the day. Don't eat for a few hours before going to bed.
- If possible, stick to a diet of juices, soups and foods that are easy to digest. Eat organic whenever possible.
- Don't wear any makeup that has trace metals in it and try to use only natural moisturizers and cleansers.
- Avoid foods that are high in copper, such as avocados, coconuts and mushrooms (read Ann Louise Gittleman's book 'Why am I always so tired? for more tips on diet).
- Don't drink any black tea or coffee.
- Use Epsom salts in your bath water.
- Drink turmeric milk or tea.
- Look into taking zinc, vitamin C, magnesium and B6 supplements (consult with a health care provider or naturopath first).
